The Ghosts of Glastonbury

The George & Pilgrim Hotel owes its existence to Glastonbury Abbey. Built in about 1475, the hotel was designed to accommodate wealthy pilgrims and other visitors to the Abbey. A secret tunnel led from the hotel to the Abbey and was the site of many whispered, conspiratorial conversations, particularly during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539.

One story tells of a monk that was discovered using the tunnel for secret trysts with his lover. As punishment, he was buried alive in the tunnel when it was blocked up. Some people think that the ghostly form of the unfortunate monk still haunts the hotel, desperately seeking a way out of the dark tunnel that was to be his grave.

Paranormal activity is so high in the hotel that some residents have been known to check out of their rooms in the middle of the night, deeply disturbed by the ghostly moaning and other spectral activity.

Over the years, both guests and workers in the hotel have reported hearing doors slamming and footsteps, even full apparitions of a man in historical dress have appeared in the bar.

mikesey 9th Oct 2008 07:21
Not bad at all! Looking at this camera, and the one viewing the market place on a Saturday night will be an experience for some! I sincerely hope that the rumour of a camera on the Tor remains just that: a rumour. Climbing the tower to change a battery or whatever is not on.
CRYSTAL STONE R 5th Oct 2008 01:50

Wicca 2nd Oct 2008 05:35
The camera in the Abbey is great news! May I suggest one location? Have you considered the Tor? I would love to watch some sunsets there once in a while...
agertonsax 24th Sep 2008 10:35
Hi Steven - this camera is being moved higher in the next week or so so we get away from the boards! We do NOT record anything and watch out for the Abbey camera going in next week.
Steven 23rd Sep 2008 05:15
This is great - even though I live here :) it would be slightly improved if camera was re-positioned away from the estate agents board as previous contributor mentioned. Can I ask do the cameras record or just live?
senga 15th Sep 2008 06:56
